Aston Martin GTE Racing - Le Mans 24 Hour
22 - 23 June
Aston Martin has a long history in motorsport and in particular in Endurance Motor Racing. Much of it has provided success and glory, but occasionally it has experienced the tragic side of the sport and this Le Mans weekend proved to be one of those occasions, with an accident, early in the race and subsequent passing of the driver of the number 95 Danish-crewed Aston Martin, Allan Simonsen.
The wishes of Allan’s family were that the team should continue in the race.
In an emotionally charged race with all sorts of changing weather conditions to deal with a close battle in GTE Pro ensued, where for the vast majority of the race, the Aston Martins held the lead, first with the #98 car and then its sister #97, the team eventually took an emotionally charged podium finish in third, which they dedicated to Allan.
Two of the four remaining Aston Martin Vantage GTEs finished the race: the 97 car, crewed by Darren Turner (GB), Stefan Mücke (D) and Peter Dumbreck (GB), took third place in LM GTE Pro, less than a half a lap behind the winning Porsche, while the #96 of Stuart Hall (GB), Jamie Campbell-Walter (GB) and Roald Goethe (D) came home sixth in LM GTE Am.
The next round of the World Endurance Championship takes place in Sao Paolo, Brazil over the weekend August 30th – September 1st.
Aston Martin GTE Racing - Sao Paulo
The fourth round of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) - the Six Hours of São Paulo in Brazil, produced some fine results for Aston Martin Racing (AMR) as the #96 Vantage GTE triumphed in the GTE Am(ateur) class and #97 car took a strong 2nd place in the GTE Pro(fessional) category.
The result boosted the chances of the machines in the World Championship itself, as the Runners Up position in GTE Pro lifts Darren Turner (GB) and Stefan Mücke (DE) - drivers of the #97 Vantage GTE - to the top of the GT Drivers’ world championship standings. It also moves Aston Martin Racing to the lead of the GTE Pro Team’s championship.
Having started from pole position in both classes, the team ran at the front of each category throughout the six hours.
The #95 all-Danish car of Kristian Poulsen, Christoffer Nygaard and newcomer Nicki Thiim dominated the GTE Am class for close to five hours and led the entire GTE field for part of the race, before a wheel nut failure ended its race early and promoted the #96 machine to the head of the class. Britons Jamie Campbell-Walter and Stuart Hall then held this lead to the chequered flag, beating their nearest competitors by a clear 45.7 seconds.
It was very nearly a double Gulf victory, as in GTE Pro, the blue and orange #97 Vantage GTE ran within striking distance of the class leader for much of the race. It eventually finished just 1.4 seconds adrift after 212 laps of the Interlagos circuit. En route for that, It set the fastest GTE lap of the entire race, underlining the Vantage GTE’s inherent outright pace.
John Gaw, Aston Martin Racing Team Principal, commented: “It is a terrific and well deserved result for the #96 car and a great win for Jamie and Stuart. It was very close in GTE Pro and, although we missed out on the win by less than two seconds, it is good to see Darren, Stefan and Aston Martin Racing now leading the championships.”
The FIA WEC resumes with the Six Hours of the Circuit of the Americas in Texas, USA, on 22 September.
