The Eight Best Winter Cocktails This Season
Summertime drinking is all about vibrant colours and tropical, fruity flavours tantalising our taste buds,
but
we think the more restrained nature of winter cocktails are better suited to the elegant modern gentleman.
Understated and cool like the season itself, these beverages are usually complex with a touch of spice or
zest to warm you up. To ensure you’re drinking in style when the season changes, Hackett’s cocktail
connoisseur is here to recommend the eight best winter cocktails to sip on throughout the coldest
months.
Hot Gin Toddy
Apple Cider Martini
Snowball
Winter Daiquiri
Boulevardier
Irish Coffee
Cranberry Pomegranate Mojito
Sparkling Ginger Margarita
Hot Gin Toddy
Though dark liquors like rum and whisky usually make up the essence of a hot toddy, we prefer gin. The botanicals in the spirit really emerge after a blast of hot water, creating a warm and soothing concoction that may even help you fight off a nasty winter cold.
Ingredients
- 2 oz of Chase GB Extra Dry Gin
- ¾ oz of fresh orange juice
- 2 oz of hot water
- 1 tbsp of honey
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 orange slice
Instructions
Pour gin, honey and orange juice into a mug before adding hot water. Stir all ingredients thoroughly until the honey is properly dissolved, then garnish with the cinnamon stick and orange slice.
Apple Cider Martini
Apple martinis can certainly be enjoyed all year round, but incorporating cider and spicy liqueur will give you a perfect seasonal beverage. While this recipe is undoubtedly full of flavour, it’s surprisingly light and crisp, best suited to those who prefer dry drinks to sweet.
Ingredients
- 1¾ oz of vodka
- 1½ oz of apple cider
- ¼ oz of ginger or cinnamon liqueur
- 1 cinnamon stick or apple slice
- Splash of Grand Marnier
Instructions
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and shake well. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with the cinnamon stick or apple slice.
Snowball
This Christmastime classic has yet to fall out of style, and drinkers have continued to lap up the snowball’s creamy, velvety texture since it reached peak popularity in the 1970s. A comforting retro beverage that’s simple to make and will leave you feeling merry.
Ingredients
- 1½ oz of advocaat
- 3½ oz of lemonade
- ¾ oz of lime juice
- 1 lime or orange slice
Instructions
Fill a glass with ice and pour advocaat, lemonade and lime juice over it. Stir lightly and garnish with a lime or orange slice.
Winter Daiquiri
This twist on the signature summertime tipple is a joy to drink. A zingy combination of orange and sweet maple syrup is elegantly elevated by the richness and complexity of a delicious golden rum.
Ingredients
- 2oz of golden rum
- ¾ oz of maple spirit
- 1¾ oz of orange juice
- 1 cinnamon stick or slice of orange peel
Instructions
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and shake well. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with the cinnamon stick or orange peel.
Boulevardier
Similar in style to a Negroni, but switch the gin for bourbon or rye and you’ve got yourself a Boulevardier. This small substitution makes a big difference, creating a boozy concoction perfectly balancing bitter and sweet and packed with intriguing rich flavours.
Ingredients
- 1 oz of bourbon or rye
- 1 oz of Campari
- 1 oz of sweet vermouth
- Orange twist
Instructions
Pour the bourbon/rye, Campari and sweet vermouth into a mixing glass with ice. Stir well, strain into a chilled low tumbler and garnish with an orange twist.
Irish Coffee
An Irish coffee is the most decadent way to finish a winter meal. Comforting yet indulgent, the warming and satisfying blend of whiskey and coffee should leave you feeling cosy on the coldest nights.
Ingredients
- 1¾ oz of Irish whiskey
- 5 oz of hot black coffee
- 2 tbsp of double cream
- 1 tsp of brown sugar
- 1 pinch of grated nutmeg
Instructions
Gently whip the double cream to thicken and leave aside. Pour the coffee into a mug or heatproof glass, followed by the whiskey and brown sugar. Stir until the sugar has dissolved, add the cream on top and sprinkle the nutmeg.
Cranberry Pomegranate Mojito
Cranberries are often a key part of a Christmas dinner and they take centre stage in this marvellous mojito designed for the winter months. Fruity and citrusy without being sickly sweet, a glass of this cocktail will go down a storm at any festive party.
Ingredients
- 1 ½ oz of white rum
- 2 oz of pomegranate juice
- ¼ cup of cranberries
- 3 tbsp of water
- 2 tbsp of lime juice
- 2 tsp of brown sugar
- 1 bottle of sparkling water
- 1 slice of lime
- 6 sprigs of fresh mint
Instructions
Heat the sugar, water and cranberries in a small saucepan for five minutes to create a thick sauce. Add the lime juice and mint to a glass filled with ice and stir. Pour in the rum, pomegranate juice and cranberry syrup then top with sparkling water and a slice of lime.
Sparkling Ginger Margarita
Spicy and sophisticated, the sparkling ginger margarita is ideal for New Year’s Eve celebrations. Inject some life into dark winter nights with a cool, bubbly beverage sharpened with fresh ginger and tequila.
Ingredients
- 1½ oz of blanco tequila
- 1 oz of sparkling wine
- ½ oz of triple sec
- ½ oz of lime juice
- ½ cup agave syrup
- 2 tbsp water
- 1 oz of finely chopped ginger
- 2 thin slices of ginger, roughly chopped
Instructions
Create the ginger agave syrup by heating a saucepan of agave and water, then add the ginger. Allow it to simmer for two minutes then cool to room temperature and strain. Place the chopped ginger slices into a cocktail shaker and use a wooden spoon to mash, before pouring in the tequila, lime juice, triple sec, ginger agave syrup and ice. Shake well and strain into a glass, topping with sparkling wine.
