Cord has roots that start as far back as 200 B.C in ancient Egypt, where fabric was woven near the then-capital, Al-Fustat, and named Fustian. It didn’t have the same raised texture as corduroy has today, but it was certainly as weighty as it now is. It wasn’t until the 19th century in Manchester when cord, as we know it today, was established and the hard-wearing fabric was used in the uniforms of the military and factory workers.
