A brief guide to Japan

Rugby excitement is at fever pitch in Japan! The indescribably beautiful landscape of Japan will play host to fans from across the world.

Jeremy has been visiting the country for well over two decades now, the trips have allowed him to catch a glimpse of Japanese style and find inspiration along the way. Japan is like the Switzerland of Asia, nearly everything is on time and efficient. 600,000 well mannered international fans will descend upon the various cities, the largest number in the tournament’s history.

We give you three cities that are unmissable during this period. Enjoy the city as well as the sporting action. Use your time wisely and be sure to be inspired, like our founder, by the wondrous cultural offerings available in Japan.

JAPAN:

Tokyo - the capital

Of course we all know Tokyo as the fast-paced capital of Japan and the city never ceases to amaze its visitors. The city will, without a doubt, aim to exceed the expectations of all previous editions of the Rugby World Cup. It’s impossible to highlight all the wonders but be sure to check out the old downtown area with the futuristic Tokyo Skytree juxtaposed with an ancient temple, the bold streets of Harajuku and the famous pedestrian scramble crossing at Shibuya. Why not try a Sake tasting tour?

Yokohama - the port

Residing just south of the capital, its close proximity to Tokyo has resulted in a sophisticated transport system with seamless links between the two cities. The history of this port city is what makes it so relevant to the Rugby World Cup. The arrival of foreign influences have molded and shaped the present and future of the city. Yokohama has consistently introduced new concepts to Japan first. Popular spots include Motomachi and Yamate districts, the Yokohama Landmark Tower featuring spectacular views of Mt. Fuji and the Minato Mirai 21 district. Check out the European influences when you fit in a post-match city stroll.

Osaka - the food haven

Osaka has long been referred to as the “Kitchen of Japan”, the cultural and social differences only make us more curious to experience their ubiquitous takoyaki battered octopus snacks and the kushikatsu deep-fried skewers of bite-sized vegetables, meats and seafood. Japan’s oldest dedicated rugby stadium was built here making it a must-do for any rugby fan. Head to Higashiosaka City to try the ever popular curry bun in the shape of a rugby ball.

LONDON:

Strike the balance between gentleman and rugby fan perfectly with this selection of three pubs to watch every game.

Patch - the luxury bar

If you are working in the City, then St Pauls is just a stone's throw away. After a stressful day at the office, you may want a more luxurious affair. Splash out on their VIP basement room or choose from an array of different rooms including the garden room or the snug. Set up a strong base and let the drinks flow.

The Ship - the sport fanatic

A notorious sporting pub, this Wandsworth haunt is well known for being a raucous affair with an electric atmosphere. They always push the boat out with special World Cup menus and with private booths also on offer, what’s not to look forward to?

Pub on The Park - the hipster twist

This spot on London Fields is perfect for the urban dandy. The last edition featured an elaborate ale festival and barbecue every weekend during the tournament. Set up camp in the spacious outdoor terrace or make it a more private affair and reserve an area.
